The Droyne

The following is an exact reproduction of a faction sheet I handed out to one of our players in the Diplomacy game I set up to run in the background of the regular Grenzland campaign. I'm adding this here to show how space aliens from a science fiction rpg and readily be included in a classic medieval fantasy wargames campaign. It references

The Ancients

a highly advanced spacefaring species, who \[em] according to the lore of the Traveller universe \[em] "exported" humanity to the stars 300.000 years before our time.

Current location
.PP
In close Orbit around Sol III, our mythical Earth, around 160.000 AD.
Yes, history is a bit skewed in the far future. Factually, the Ancients
were still around back then, looking for intelligent species to
spread to the stars.

The Situation
.PP
A particular locale on the planet has caught your attention. The
Droyne do not know it is called *Grenzland* yet, but that's exactly
what you're looking at. About three and one half rotations ago, of
Sol III orbiting around it's single System Star, one of the two moons
was hit by a massive surge of energy. It exploded and subsequently
some of it's fragments tumbled down onto the planet to hit your area
of interest in a couple of devastating meteor strikes.
.PP
Who or what caused this impressive demonstration of fire power?
.PP
About two rotations ago, your own faction was hit by disaster.
Possibly due to orbiting debris, your sister ship crashed into the
Ocean south of your current area of interest. There has been no
contact to your comrades since, and by now your crew is convinced that
none of those other Droyne survived.
.PP
However this may be, your scopes and bio sensors show increasing
activity of various native species somehow vying for dominance. If one
of these species could be identified as the originator of the power
surge, it might indeed be a prime candidate species to advance out
into the universe.
.PP
You have identified and provisionally labled:

All Droynes have the psionic ability to become invisible by

clouding the minds of their opponents. While the Droyne do
have wings, Sol III's gravity is to strong and the atmosphere not
dense enough to actually use them here. Droyne have a normal
movement of 12" on foot.

Neutral - identify one species from Sol III to pick up and promote to
the Stars. That's the task, the Grand Father, your godly and most supreme
leader has given to you. Choose wisely! (the whole body of Sci-Fi RPG
literature might depend in it ...)
.PP
Here's a
.I Caveat
I realized while revising this faction sheet: The
story about the ancients is some early 1980s science fantasy yarn. The
idea that some "angel" like heavenly beings pick out a single "race" to
spread to the stars seems cool, but it also contains elements of a
racist story - like many fantasy stories if you think about it.
It might not feel right with 2025 readers and players.
So be mindful of that, and I wouldn't mind at all, if you changed this
factions motives entirely, pick a whole bunch of species, or say that the Droyne
will change their minds altogether and never export anyone from terra.
It's your faction and your game.

.PP
All Droyne have telepathically controlled beam pistols, which work
like Lightning Bolts in Chainmail. Warriors are equipped with
high-tech halberts of sorts, to be used in melee.
.PP
You have a Spaceship from the ancienct far future, that looks and
functions like a conglomerate of spherical pods. Movement about the
spaceship works by teleporting from one pod to another. Individual
pods can detach from the whole to work as individual shuttles. They're
ultra fast, compared to anything known on Sol III. Teleporting from
one pod to another also works when they're detached, turning them into
bidirectional gates. In effect, one way or another, you can
move to anywhere on the map instantly and make contact to one of the
other factions - be sure to describe what they're looking at!
.PP
Round sections of the pods walls can dematerialize on command to allow
to leave and enter the pod from the outside, for example when dirtside
on Sol III. Also, the pods float on water, even when powered down.
.PP
Take your time, engange and interact as much as you like, enjoy!
